How to Measure for Carpet

Measuring for carpet is not as straightforward as it may first appear to be. This is basically because carpet usually comes in 12 foot widths (although sometimes it comes in 13.5 and 15 feet widths). This means that to cover a 10' x 10' room you will need a 12' x 10 peice of carpet. If the room you are trying to cover is more than 12' long in both dimensions then you will need to have one or more seams. As you add more rooms to the layout, calculating the amount of material you need becomes more and more complicated because the estimator is trying to balance material waste and seam placement. You don't want to be left with excessive waste, but at the same time, you want to minimize the number of seams and design the placement of seams so they are not in the heavily trafficked areas if possible.

One more thing: all of the carpet has to be running the same direction. You can not have carpet in one room running North and South and in a connecting room running East and West. This is called quarter-turning and it will make the seams where the two directions meet very noticable. There is also an exra labor charge if there is furniture to be moved, stairs, or other specialty work involved. Sometimes there are also pattern matches involved which require even more material waste. If the rooms being covered with carpet do not connect then the carpet can be quarter-turned and you don't have to worry about the pattern match.

A skilled estimator can design the layout so that the extra carpet from one room can be used for fill in another room. Again the goal is to design the best layout which will minimize both the material waste and seam placement. We would be happy to measure your house and give you an estimate of what a particular carpet would cost to install in your home at no charge to you. Just come on in and speak to one of our friendly and knowledgeable sales professionals. We look forward to seeing you.
